Tennis Hasn’t Become Too Long. It’s Become Too Dense. Too many players are missing from Wimbledon 2026: Alcaraz with a wrist injury, Rune with an Achilles tendon injury, Musetti with a thigh injury, Draper with an arm injury, Korda with a back injury, and many others only just back from long layoffs. This is not bad luck, and it is not enough to say that players “play too much.” I think we need to look harder at how the game itself has changed.
The problem is not simply the number of matches.
It is as if every match now contains more tennis than it used to. The average length of a men’s Grand Slam match has gone from roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes in 1999 to 2 hours and 54 minutes in 2023: about one-fifth longer. That has happened despite rules designed to shorten matches, from the ten-point tiebreak in deciding sets introduced in 2022 to the serve clock, which has not actually sped the game up. Matches are getting longer because finishing a point is harder than ever. That is true on the men’s side; in the women’s game, match length has remained stable, but the mechanics of the rally have changed for everyone.
One reason is the equipment. Modern racquets forgive bad contact: the ball that used to die now drops back in. Polyester strings, stiffer and, on their own, less powerful than natural gut, allow players to swing harder and generate more spin while still keeping the ball in court. The modern serve often travels above 200 km/h and, at its peak, above 220. But even that is no longer enough to finish points, because defenders get to everything and put the ball back in play.

Surfaces have become more similar in speed: across the tour, fast courts are a little slower than they used to be, and Wimbledon is slower than Halle or Queen’s. Above all, the four Slams have become more similar in the height and regularity of the bounce. In 2001, Wimbledon changed its grass to 100% Lolium perenne, or perennial ryegrass, on firmer soil, and the bounce became higher and more predictable, not just slower. That is what killed off serve-and-volley: the 2001 final, Ivanisevic-Rafter, was serve and net; the 2002 final, Hewitt-Nalbandian, was played from the baseline, with no serve-and-volley.
Then add the balls: not all the same, often slower, fluffier, heavier on impact. This is not a detail. When the ball comes off the strings with less pace, the winner costs more. Today, players who are good on clay often play well, and in a similar way, on grass too.
Hard court is the dominant surface: among ATP top-100 players, almost 58% of minutes are played on hard courts; in 2026, hard courts host two of the four Slams, six of the nine Masters 1000s, and ten of the sixteen ATP 500s. It is also the most punishing surface, because it combines impact and friction. Players brake hard, change direction on high-grip footing, and absorb force from both the court and the ball. That is where the cost is highest.
And the cost is physical. Every extreme recovery is a brake and a restart: in other words, load. Today’s tennis does not just ask players to hit the ball. It asks them to hit after braking, rotating, and recovering: emergency power, repeated thousands of times. And it asks them to do it with less biomechanical variety. If serve-and-volley disappears, if the volley becomes an exception, if the slice is used more to defend than to truly change the point, the body ends up repeating the same movements more often: slide, open stance, rotation, topspin, lateral recovery. This is not just nostalgia for the tactical and technical richness of the game. It is also a problem of load distribution. The more the game looks the same, the less the stresses are spread around.
The calendar did not create all of this, but it does one decisive thing: with an eleven-month season and almost no empty space, it does not give the body time to recover. A problem that is not allowed to heal becomes chronic; the comeback comes too soon; the player breaks down again. The rankings do not cause injuries, but they make it harder to stop in time, because stopping means losing ground.
The signs point in that direction. A 2024 study of more than 850,000 matches on the second and third tiers of the professional game found a rise over time in mid-match retirements, with higher rates on hard courts and clay than on grass. On the main tour, meanwhile, the problem has moved beyond medical reports and into the players’ public conversation: an overfilled calendar, insufficient recovery, slower balls and conditions, more effort required to finish points. It is not one statistic that says the body can no longer cope; it is the whole picture pointing that way.
Technology has allowed tennis to break through its old technical limits. It has not raised the limit of the human body. The game has become less varied and more punishing at the same time, and the players are the ones paying for it.
